Grand Opening of Thomson Memorial Dog Park Set for Sep 6

by Toronto Dog

We have some more very exciting news! Not only has the location of the off leash area within Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough been finalized, a grand opening ceremony has been announced to take place on Monday September 6th at 6pm.

Thomson Memorial Dog Park will be located near the intersection of Brimley Rd and Lawrence Ave in the hydro fields just East of the tennis courts. The invitation to the grand opening ceremonies issued by City Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker boasts that not only will TMDP be Scarborough’s first dog park, it will in fact be the largest dog park in the city of Toronto. Having visited the site, it certainly does look fairly large. The park will also include a separate area just for small dogs. Construction of the fencing is currently under way. The entire dog park will be fully fenced in and will include multiple double gated entrances.

Scarborough Dog Owners Rejoice!

by Toronto Dog

Near the beginning of 2010 we learned that finally after many years of waiting Scarborough residents would indeed be getting their very own off leash dog parks. Botanny Hill Dog Park was the first Scarborough dog park announced, followed shortly by plans for Thomson Memorial Dog Park. Both parks are scheduled to open shortly in September 2010. We have been following this story with excitement! For more details specific to each individual park please visits those parks’ individual information pages on our blog (just follow the links above).

THS Donations Down 60%

August 20, 2010

Moving Forward at the THS

Dear Friend of the Toronto Humane Society,

Donations are down almost 60% at the Toronto Humane Society. This, in effect, translates into millions of lost dollars for our organization. Our newly elected Board of Directors, management and staff are working hard to make this shelter a leader in animal welfare in North America.

Here are some examples of new initiatives implemented by the new Board of Directors, since their election in June 2010:

- All animals are spayed and neutered before being placed in adoption. Some 180 animals have been spayed / neutered since June 28, 2010.
- We have developed partnerships with local rescue groups like Toronto Cat Rescue and Annex Cat Rescue.
- We have extended the hand of help to many shelters outside of Toronto to assist in transferring animals to our own facility, to ease over-crowding and unnecessary euthanasia.
- New community committees have been established to make recommendations to the Board on matters such as Adoptions, Animal Welfare, Fundraising, – Volunteers, Spay and Neuter and many more.
- A consultation has been arranged with Mr. Bill Bruce, Director: Calgary Animal Services.
- The Society will have a presence at the Anti-Breed Specific Legislation Rally.
- A food bank has been implemented to offer community support for owners who wish to keep animals rather than surrender them to the shelter.
- The Society has pledged its support to the Toronto Feral Cat Coalition and will become closely involved with the Trap-Neuter-Release program.
- A process of ongoing review and changes to policies and procedures at the Society to ensure that standards are maintained and improved.
- The Society is committed to change but we urgently need you help and support. All donations in excess of $ 20.00 receive a charitable tax receipt. If you wish to donate to the THS, please call the shelter on 416-392-2273 or go to our online fundraising tools at www.torontohumanesociety.com

The Society would like to thank all our past, current and future donors for their ongoing commitment to the many animals that need help.

Hershey’s Rally is this Sunday at Noon, Coronation Dog Park

by Toronto Dog

poster Hersheys Rally is this Sunday at Noon, Coronation Dog Park

Please come join Hershey’s Rally on Sunday August 29th in Coronation Dog Park in Toronto. The rally is in support of private member’s bill introduced by MPP Cheri DiNovo, calling for the immediate removal of the breed-specific legislation (BSL) in Ontario. This morally reprehensible ban is responsible for the deaths of thousands of friendly, well-behaved dogs who’ve been ripped from their homes and put to death, simply because of the way they look. Until BSL is revoked, all responsible dog owners are at risk.

Bill Bruce, Calgary Director of Animal & Bylaw Services, and the creator of the now world famous Calgary Model for animal control will be speaking at the rally! The event will include music, vendors, family activities, Canine Good Neighbour Testing, agility course, contents, and prizes. The rally will be followed by the the Pittie and Pals walk to PawsWay at 5:30 and a candlelight vigil at Queen’s Park at 7:30. Please show your support and let Queen’s Park know that your Ontario includes ALL dogs.
