Sherwood Park is easily accesible off Mt.Pleasant Ave using either Sherwood Ave or Sheldrake Blvd as entrance points. Both streets end with a public parking lot for park users that runs between these two streets. The main entrance for the park accessible on foot (pedestrian vehicles are prohibited to continue down the road that enters the park) is at Sherwood Ave.
The Sherwood Park off leash area is different from conventional dog parks. It isn’t a field that is fenced off or designated as off leash, instead it is a set of fenced in trails through the park’s wooded area. The fencing is poor at best in some areas of the trails and it is meant to provide a visible barrier between the trails and the sensitive ecological area of the park. If your dog is not reliable off leash, DO NOT rely on this fencing to keep your dog safe or enclosed. There are gaps and wholes in the fencing a smaller dog will easily get through, in fact there are areas where the fencing is bent or has gaps big enough for a large dog to sneak through. The gates to enter the trails are also left open. The area on the other side of the fence is not the sort of place you would want to be running through chasing your dog. In fact dogs and people are not allowed outside of the fenced area as it is considered ecologically sensitive. Bicycles are not allowed on the off leash paths.
In addition to the official legal designated off leash area of the park, the local dog owners seem to prefer to gather and let their dogs off leash in a large well manicured field just beyond the park’s main entrance. While the area is certainly not a legal off leash zone, it appears the local dog crowd meets right under the nose of the park staff unbothered. If you are entering the park through the main entrance, be aware that you may likely be approached by off leash dogs as you walk down the main roadway.
